The History of Hafiz Mustafa

The story of Hafiz Mustafa sweets started in the basement of shop no. 86 in Eminönü, Istanbul in 1864 by Hadji Ismail Hakki Zade, father of Hafiz Mustafa who came from Orta in the state of Shankari, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Aziz.

Ismail Bey was in the exchange business, yet this did not prevent him from working in Sweets industry in his basement in Istanbul by the assistance of his son Hafiz Mustafa who was “muezzin” in Arbasilar mosque. He was fond of sweets business and a big fan thereof.

Mr. Hadji Ismail Hakki is one of the first producers of “Akide şekeri”; a sweet of a special importance in the days of the Ottoman Empire where mortar stone was being used in its manufacture. Hafiz Mustafa was very skillful in pastry. He crowned this craftsmanship by inventing “Poğaça” the most popular morning meal for Turks. He, again, proved his distinction internationally where he won 11 European medals in the field of pastry & sweets in 1926-1938.
